We finally caved in and went to see the movie. It’s just crazy how much we know about…all of it.
We thought the movie was entertaining but I think the screen writer missed out on a chunk of historic racing drama. Did you know there were THIRTEEN Ford GT-40’s that STARTED the 1966 race? The 8 factory big-block cars plus 5 small-block privateers. After 24 hours, know how many finished? THREE. Get it? THREE. As in, THOSE THREE - the 1-2-3 three.
So, YES - after the last Ferrari blew up, Ford truly did order their cars to slow down but it was because Ford couldn’t risk the drivers racing each other for the win and potentially blowing up the only three cars they had left.
Here’s more - below is a photo of the winners - the drivers of the first and second place GT-40’s. The super tired guy in the raincoat with his arm around Ken Miles? That’s Leo Beebe. Ken Miles is the one in the funny hat with his arm around the winner of the race, Bruce McLaren. Know why? They were teammates for Shelby American and their team finished 1 and 2, which is why they were all having a laugh and a celebratory beer together. As a team.
The movie was fun but the truth is cool.
